As mystery writers, we're always looking for ideas for our stories. Don't overlook your own family tree.
Resources for genealogical research have expanded over the years. Patrick will discuss the methods he used to "dig up" his predecessors, from letter writing, searching public files—probate records, and birth and death certificates, reading historical newspapers and library files, and finally, using digitized and indexed newspapers (the latter from the comfort of home.)
Technologies used for genetic testing are changing very quickly. It can hard for us writers, an hence our characters, to keep up. Patrick will give us an overview of how DNA testing works, what you can learn from a DNA test, and what companies will do with your data.
