It Would Be A Crime To Miss Our Sisters In Crime Holiday Party

The Upstate SC Chapter of Sisters in Crime will hold its annual Holiday Party-Dinner on Thursday, December 8, at The Runway Café, 21 Airport Rd, Greenville, S.C. Please note this party takes the place of our normal first Thursday of the month meeting date, e.g. there will be NO meeting December 1.

The party will be held in the café’s “Hangar.” Plan to arrive between 6 and 6:30 p.m. The dinner buffet line will open at 6:30. Since the Hangar is larger than our regular meeting space, we have plenty of room to welcome guests—fellow mystery lovers, friends and neighbors, and spouses curious about those monthly crime-night getaways.

Our traditional holiday party format offers plenty of time to socialize and discuss our “novel” interests. This provides an ideal opportunity to get better acquainted with fellow crime fiction enthusiasts. Attendees are invited to bring bags of books for a free book exchange. During an after-dinner “open mike” segment, members and guests are invited to read short (3-5 minute) passages from their favorite 2011 book finds or their own published novels or works in progress.

Reservations are required and a per person admission charge ($10 plus tax and a 15% service charge) will be collected at the door. Admission covers the dinner buffet including drink and dessert. Check back on this site for a Holiday Buffet Menu. We'll try to have it posted by December 1.

Reservations should be emailed to Ellis Vidler (ellis@ellisvidler.com). The reservation deadline is noon, December 6. After that date, any cancellations or no-shows will be charged since the chapter must pay for the number reserved. The admission fee applies even for individuals who elect not to take advantage of the buffet.

Upstate Chapter Celebrates Sisters in Crime 25th Anniversary

Welcome to the launch of our new Blog!

This blog will focus on the events and activities of the Upstate Chapter of Sisters in Crime, while more information about the National Chapter is available at www.sistersincrime.org

We begin our posts with an exciting announcement regarding an important event for the national organization of Sisters in Crime:

Local Mystery Authors & Hampton Memorial Library
Invite Readers To A ‘Sisters in Crime’ Celebration

Do you enjoy reading mysteries, thrillers or suspense novels? Want to know how authors dream up plots, create characters or tackle research chores? Have you toyed with the idea of writing your own novel? Are you curious about ebooks and new publishing options?

On Sunday, October 16, a panel of area mystery, thriller and suspense authors will answer these questions and more as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sisters in Crime (SinC), an international organization that champions women authors. The event is free and open to the public. It will start at 2:30 p.m. at the Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library, located just off Highway 123 (behind Wendy’s), at 304 Biltmore Road in Easley, S.C.

The program will include two panel discussions: the first on Mystery/Thriller/Suspense, the second on Publishing Trends. Panelists, all published members of Sisters in Crime, include Steve Brown, Kathleen Delaney, Linda Lovely, Maryn Sinclair, Faye Tollison and Ellis Vidler. SinC welcomes both men and women members.

The 25th Anniversary event also will include drawings for free autographed copies of the trade paperback books published by the panelists.

Refreshments will be served by the Sisters in Crime regional chapter between the two panel discussions. SinC members also will offer handouts describing how SinC membership benefits authors and readers. During the break, books penned by the panelists will be offered for sale and authors will sign their books.

Ten percent of all sales will be donated to the Pickens County Library System to fund purchases of additional works by SinC authors. The Library System carries a variety of books by both regional and national SinC authors, such as Tess Gerritsen, Sara Paretsky, Nancy Pickard, Vicki Lane, Cathy Pickens and C.J. Lyons. SinC gives away $1,000 each month to a library entered in its lottery program. The organization is also a member of the American Library Association’s Library Champions program.

The mission of Sisters in Crime is to promote the professional development and advancement of women crime writers to achieve equality in the industry. Founded in 1986, the organization has more than 3,000 members—authors, readers, publishers, agents, booksellers, librarians, and others who love mysteries.
The regional chapter, one of 38 worldwide, meets the first Thursday of each month at The Runway Café in Greenville, S.C. Guest speakers include law enforcement officials and specialists in various forensic fields as well as regional mystery authors.
